Book Review – Jonathan Livingstone Seagull

It was morning, and the new sun sparkled gold across the ripples of a gentle sea.

A mile from shore a fishing boat chummed the water, and the word for breakfast flock flashed through the air, till a crowd of a thousand seagulls came to dodge and fight for bits of food.It was another busy day beginning.

But way off alone, out by himself beyond boat and shore,Jonathan Livingstone seagull was practicing. A hundred feet in the sky he lowered his seagullwebbed feet, lifted his beak, and strained to hold a painful hard twisting curve through his wings. The curve meant that he would slow, and now he slowed untill the wind was whisper in his face, untill the ocean stood still beneath him.He narrowed his eyes in fierce concentration ,held his breath ,forced one….single….more….inch…..of ….curve…..then his feathers ruffled,he stalled and fell.

Seagulls as you know, never falter, never stall. To stall in  the air for them disgrace and it is dishonor.

But Jonathan Livingstone seagull, unashamed, streching his wings again in that trembling hard curve – slowing, slowing, and stalling again –

Was no ordinary bird.

Overcome space and all we have left is here.Overcome time and all we have left is now.

Chiang says” You will begin to touch heaven in the moment you begin to touch perfect speed. And that isn’t flying thousand miles an hour,or a million,or flying at the speed of light.Because any number is a limit, and perfection does’nt have limits.Perfect speed,my son,is being there.”

A classic from Richard Bach the book has inspired millions including me.I feel a tremendous sense of identification with Jonathan Seagull Achievement that’s measured with a view of what people think of you is shallow, fleeting but achievement that brings you closer to yourself is permanent, for always and it is a part of you.Life is a continuous journey of raising the bar on yourself .The joy of knowing that you have been able to challenge yourself and win is unparalleled.Enjoy being yourself, revel in your own company, wake up early or work late in the night………the silence is bliss full.

Lines from Sarveshwar Dayal Saxena resonate a similiar resolve :

सामर्थ्य केवल इच्छा का दूसरा नाम है,
जीवन और मृत्यु के बीच जो भूमि है
वह नियति की नहीं मेरी है।

A classic that takes about an hour to read but a lifetime to absorb.Read one page at a time.

The height of sourcing…

Retailers can be the marketeers for products made in cottage and small scale units reaching out to a new set of customers who could not have been serviced otherwise. These customers are in smaller towns and villages and the existingmarketing channels are unable to effectively bridge the supply demand gap.

Here’s a picture tour of a small town called Pilukhwa near Ghaziabad. The pictures will give a new dimension to your understanding of manufacturing processes, logistics,Over the counter display and sales. It’s quite interesting.

Pilukhwa junction is where we enter the town

image024 And those are bed sheets drying in a environment friendly process. They are lying on top of cow dung cakes so they do not get ‘dirty’ and the person who gathers the ‘cakes’ once dried up can also fold the bed sheets and take them along.Saving costs and energy.

image029

It’s motor able so far ….

image0331

That’s Vivek , my colleague. We walk down from here   .Yes that’s a tonga which is causing a traffic jam !

image034

What will you call this? Shipped or whipped  !!!

I know you are dying to know the price of those.

2 $ for a single bed sheet

4 $ for a double bed sheet

The color fastness and shrinkage are guarenteed.I mean they will not fade or shrink.

So what do you think? Want to come along with us on our next expedition.

Here comes the sun

Always manages to light up a gloomy day.Beautiful song by The Beatles..

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,

daffodils1
and I say it’s all right

Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter
Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it’s all right

Little darling, the smiles returning to the faces
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been here
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun
and I say it’s all right

Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…
Sun, sun, sun, here it comes…

Little darling, I feel that ice is slowly melting
Little darling, it seems like years since it’s been clear
Here comes the sun, here comes the sun,
and I say it’s all right
It’s all right

At the splendor…….I stared

Jalwa baqadr-e-zarf-e-nazar dekhte rahe         humayun-tomb
Kya dekhte hum unko magar dekhte rahe

At the splendor, with an appreciative eye, I gazed
What else could I see- but at her, I gazed.

Apna hi aks pesh-e-nazar dekhte rahe
Aaina ru-ba-ru tha jidhar dekhte rahe

At my own reflection, standing before myself, I gazed
It was me in the mirror everywhere, wherever I gazed

Unki hareem-e-naaz kahaan aur hum kahaan
Naqsh-o-nigaar-e-parda-e-dar dekhte rahe

Before the  sanctuary of  her grace, I stood nowhere
At the imprints ,at the veil, at the door, I gazed

Aisi bhi kuch firaaq ki raatein guzar gayin
Jaise unhi ko pesh-e-nazar dekhte rahe

Some nights of separation have gone by as if
It were her, in front of my eyes,  I gazed.

Har lehza shaan-e-husn badalti rahi Jigar
Har aan hum jahaan-e-digar dekhte rahe

With every glance, the grandeur of beauty changed, O Jigar
At every glory of this transforming world, I gazed.
