Poverty and Power in India

“Perpetuate Poverty,Stay in Power “ has become the success mantra for politicians in India. This is how congress has managed to rule us for a large part of our independant history and this is how most political parties are planning thier strategy for occupying seats at Raisina hill. samajwadi

The latest to join the freebee brigade are Mulayam and Amar Singh who have completely lost it as far as I am concerned. They played a very good trick on 50 % brain dead Sanju Baba by nominating him as the Party’s candidate from Lucknow after consulting their friends in the Legal business that he will never get the permission to stand in elections because of his terror credentials. They promised Sanju that if he does not get the Green Sign his beloved and graceful wife Manyata will grace the Lucknow Parliamentary seat.Gullible as ever poor Munna fell in the trap.Samajwadi Party got tremendous air time in the media and Amar Singh practised his  back of the truck poetry to his heart’s fullfillment. Now Nafisa Ali is SP’s candidate and Manyata is away in Bahamas to pick up pieces of her shattered ambitions.Wake up Sanju…you are once again putting your foot in the mouth by saying that the police beat me as Nargis Dutt was a Muslim. You will go to Jail Finally and once and for all and no one will be there with you.Do what you do best – Hop,skip and make faces. You will be safe.

Anyway,Lets come to the main point.

In Ramayana Tulsidas says for Ravana :

Jaako Prabhu Daarun Dukh Dehi,Taaki Mati pehle har lehi.

Which translates to :

Whom God wills to be in Misery,he first takes away their intellect.

This is exactly the case with my native state of UP.By careful analysis of people’s mentality to forever remain beggars so they do not have to work Mulayam singh has come up with a novel scheme. He has promised that if at all he comes to power he will ban English and Computers.Wow ! isn’t that something ?? Full Marks to you Mr Ancient India.I sincerely feel that you should ban education. No maths is needed to slit people’s throats or to pull trigger of country made pistols.Ask your fellow partymen and they will confirm it.You don’t need to talk in English to loot folks at Gunpoint.I am not joking .With no education and employment that’s what Youth will do and is doing right now in UP.

If you just go to any of the cities in UP you will find house after house with old people whose sons and daughters have moved to other states or countries for employment. In fact it has become a creteria for being worthy. If you are still in UP there is something wrong with you.Crime and Politics are the only opportunities made available to the young people of this God forsaken state. The worst thing is that people have accepted their fate and are ready to live with whatever comes their way.

I read  on someones blog an interesting couplet that sums the mood :

Apna Kyaa? Phir wohi Chandan Phir Wohi Paani         mulayam2

Kou nrip hoye hamein kaun haani ?

Translates to :

I have the same ordinary life regardless of who rules the kingdom

While other states are competing with each other to get big companies to set shop in their states Mayawati and Mulayam have managed to chase everyone away.Poor, illeterate and unemployed make a stable vote bank. They have no option but to keep coming to their masters for their daily bread so they remain alive and keep voting election after election.

I had watched a Movie Narasimha a few years back.Sunny Deol plays a bully who bashes and abuses everyone who dares oppose his master played by Om Puri. One day he goes to ransack the house of a poor woman and his mind changes. He has seen how Om Puri is using him.He confronts Om Puri on the issue of equality and injustice to which Om Puri lashes back ” Kaisi behaki behaki baatein kar raha hai ,Subah se pee nahin kya?” which means how the hell you are talking sense. Are you not drunk today?

The leaders in India are making sure that people are drunk with the wine of free electricity, reservation, loan waivers, illiteracy and backwardness so they cannot see right or wrong.Inaction, incompetence  and stupidity are largely distributed human traits that’s why you find only a few successfull people and hundreds who are just passing time on their way to the grave. For them half  a meal and sleep are the only two things which matter.Their only interest is to keep their bodies alive and every leader worth his namak harami salt is promising just that.

Written and spoken English with computer skills are a passport to freedom from poverty and dependance. They can guarentee a good life and freedom of choice not only to the one who has them but to all his future generations. They are therefore being seen as a threat by politicians like Mulayam Singh Yadav who represents all that is bad and ominous in God’s creation.

Time and again I have fiddled with the thought of going back and settling down in Lucknow but somehow I cannot come to terms with the thought of my illiterate children pointing guns at strangers on the highway.

May be I  am not as educated as Mr Yadav to understand his queer economic theories and that one life must be destroyed to sustain another.

One last Question – Does Mulayam’s son speak in English or know computers?

I am quoting the Hindustan Times of 13th April below :

Samajwadi Party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav does not practice what he preaches.

While the SP’s manifesto, released on Saturday, vowed to abolish expensive English medium schools, stop the use of English in administration and in courts, as well as to do away with computers wherever their function could be carried out manually, the party chief has sent both his sons to English language educational institutions and assisted the setting up of colleges and hospitals in his own village Safai, equipped with cutting edge computer technology.

Mulayam’s older son, Akhilesh Yadav, 36, MP from Kannauj, holds a degree in environmental engineering from an Australian university. His younger akhilesh1son Prateek, 22, after passing out from a leading Lucknow school, is studying management in Britain.

Akhilesh carries two Blackberries and is so comfortable with them that he can type on both simultaneously. He runs his campaign on both Facebook and Orkut.

        Dear Mr Rajnish,
First of all i’ll request your kind permission to thank Mr Balsubramaniam through your Blog for supporting my ideas.

Coming back to you Mr Rajnish, I appreciate you and your company for doing a commendable job for the farmers. Definitely it has company’s business interests but nobody expects a corporate house to do charity.

Well, i didn’t intend to get into some verbal brawl, as i actually don’t have that kind of time. I work with NGO’s and am on move 6 days a week. Mostly i’m spending nights in rural areas where i don’t get signals for my data card. I’m mostly moving around in central and eastern UP and didn’t come across e chopal thing around here. Can you specify in which area you guys are concentrating, so that i can make a visit and learn a bit about it and see if people this side can also be benifitted.

On the matter of Hindi, i’m not in any mood to get into any debate. My ideas are very clear and hard to change. You only said that Everyone cannot be Mahatma Gandhi. Similarly everyone cannot be as determined as your father. He did a gr8 job..But when you talk of a state, nation, country, you have to cater for the weekest link. A prime minister of a nation cannot expect everyone to be of his mental level. He will have to go down to their mental level and think what they want. I would request you to do the same. However English and Hindi can work parallely but what i’m asking for is public convenience and a little more respect for Hindi.

Being an Ex Armed forces Officer, i’m bit irritating but thats how i chose to be.
If i offended you anyhow, it wasn’t intentional.
        Raj Narayan

In East UP we are in Gonda,Bahraich,Hardoi and Chandauli.Apart from e choupal we have rural malls by the name of Choupal Saagar.I was in Bahraich yesterday to check out stuff and link up with customers so we know how we can add value to their lives.Had some excellent feedback on Quality and Prices.
I also feel that its not about what you say,it’s about what you do and in that sense English or Hindi are inconsequential.

      • Raj Narayan says:

Well, I’ll end it here but i hope you are may talking to the farmers in hindi only, however inconsequential it be..
        Keep up the good work.

    • aahang says:

Its interesting to note that you are using my blog to promote your views 🙂
I have nothing against Hindi but certainly I cannot tolerate people who wish to use either Hindi,English or any other language to create barriers among citizens.
My father was educated in a Village school in Ramnagar Barabanki and he did not know Elnglish when he came to study in Lucknow. But with his determination to not let this small thing bother him he worked hard and learnt to write and speak in English. If at those times all PhD thesis were written in English and a copy was sent to England he ahd no option but to do in Rome as romans do.He travelled across the world and even wrote a book in English Language on his memoirs. He continues to read and write in Hindi too and is a big follower of Hindi literature. He ust sent me some 10 books on Lucknow all in Hindi.Grow up my friends,Pls !
I am convinced that it is the thought which counts and the action which matters and no one can move me from this position. While I continue to work with Farmers being a corporate capitalist isn’t is laughable that you are promoting Hindi for nothing else but Financial gain being a Hindi translator. Are your views about protecting Hindi not guided by self motive?
It is honesty and hardwork that win in the end not dividing and mocking people on caste, color and speech.
I wish to rest the argument now – Bhagwan ke liye.

  3. aahang says:

    Well Mr Raj Narayan,

The purpose of a blog is to debate and reach out to people.By your elobarate email it seems that I have succeeded.First things first – you would know that SP itself has retracted from its statement of banning english and computers.
I can understand the anger in you but to be honest I started my career after doing my MBA with a UP government organization. Can you imagine that all the correspondence we did internally was in Hindi even though we were supposed to export and deal with international clients. The use of computers was limited to a “Screen saver’ in the GM’s office. All employees were given a computer training not to retrench anyone but just to make their own work more efficient.Needless to say that there is no excuse for laziness and living in a fool’s paradise and I quickly realized that its better to quit that to crib as changing that machinery or becoming a part of it was not an option for me.
As far as contributing to the society is concerned I have brought in more work to the craftsmen in Moradabad and other cities of UP in my role at Wal Mart than you can ever imagine. All the top exporter would still know me even though I am not in the business for 3 years.I am just saying there are different ways of showing love for your native place.
In my current role too I do not sit in plush offices as you would be imagining but work at improving life of rural folks through my company’s world well acclaimed and awarded e choupal program. If you speak to any of the farmers whose lives we touch they will swear by what good we have brought into their lives not because of anything else but our responsibility to the society that we live in.We cover 5 states through 6000 choupals and work with the farmers on improving quality of their produce, getting better yield and ensuring better prices when we buy their crops. We also distribute and sell products through our Choupal Saagars which are rural retail malls with a number of facilities for farmers.
You can chekc out my presentation at http://www.slideshare.net/rajnishkumar71
Everyone has a different way of doing things and you choose the one in which you feel you can be most effective.Al of us can not be Mahatma Gandhi.Right ?
I have explored the idea of working out of Lucknow as written in my post but what I would get paid there would be slightly more than the tax that I pay every month in my current location.I am not sure which is better more Tax for India or less tax for UP.May be you can decide for me.
    Two more things :
1.Already the official Language in UP for all state documentation and correspondence is Hindi in Devnagari script so they are just trying to be fool the public and as far as computers are concerned they make you fast and more efficient. They are in use not because less people can do more work but because more people can do even more work.India is leading the global developing economies because of our deftness with computers and english.Even the chinese are spending millions of dollars to learn English so they can compete with India.

  4. Raj Narayan says:

    Dear Mr Rajnish,

Indeed a very well written article. Very apt.. What you said in the start is very clear in every educated souls mind. But criticising Politicians is all we are doing. Is that enough? Who is doing it right? You, me or the corporate house you are working for. Is your company fulfilling its social responsibility. We don’t have guts to stop our relatives who are in government offices from indulging in corrupt practices . We don’t follow traffic rules. Take a short cut when we find that nobody’s watching. And then blame Politicians for everything….. Well i’m not supporting politicians but just defending Politics.

But definitely some part of your article is either due to some preoccupied brain or motivated by your or correctly saying our inherent selfish nature. Its what you said about your native state UP. which i personally don’t like. I actually don’t like to talk about state. I think India as one and if a particular state is facing some crisis, its a national crisis and should be addressed nationally. But thanks to our great old thinkers who made the regional party funda for the ease of governance that we have to face such things.

UP and Bihar are presently facing what was being faced by India a decade back. Brain drain… Just ask yourself, after fleeing your native place for want of comfort and money, do you have any right to even comment on its state today. Which country doesn’t have crime.. Even the developed nation like US of A has the highest rate of crimes like rape. Bangalore has women being attacked in pubs, Gujrat has Godhra, The best of the criminals find footing in the financial capital Mumbai. What are you talking about. Do people don’t get killed in other parts of country. Instead of fighting it, people like you ran away and that’s what is keeping this state in a poor state as compared to others.

Refer:While the SP’s manifesto, released on Saturday, vowed to abolish expensive English medium schools, stop the use of English in administration and in courts, as well as to do away with computers wherever their function could be carried out manually.

Mind you i’m not supporting UP politicians including SP leader Mulayam Singh.. Its jus that i think that you’ve not been able to understand the above mentioned lines that i’m explaining it once again.

I totally support the idea of stopping use of english in any goverment office which deals with public. I’ll not go in figures but there are more people who don’t know english.. Even those who have read english but later don’t get to use it don’t know how to use it. Its only the money motivated corporate world, which is not even 5 percent of total population which wants to use english becoz of offshore clients. They can but please exclude the public organisations. I’m sure if the customers want it in hindi, even corporate giants will change to hindi. After all its all about money…And talking of English… Why can’t we prosper without english.. Is China doing bad or Russia has english as its primary language. Why can’t national language Hindi be our official language. Why is it that we make so much of hue and cry when Dhoni and Bhajji don’t reach to recieve Padam Shri and ourselve show no respect to our national language.

Same goes for doing away with computers at places where not required. In our spree for computerisation, we’ve forgotten logic. Computer is to assist human not replace him. At a place you talk of unemployement and then you only create unemployement by putting a computer and asking a man to do five men’s job. Mind you this is government and it deals with public interests not a money minting Corporate House. So, modernisation is important but to only to some extent. Anything which harms the social interests of a nation, is not modernisation. So, may be we are not ready to afford the kind of modernization you are thinking of. Is it justified that only a section of society is growing AND rest is where they are infact going backwards.

Yes i too do not agree with the third point here, which talks about abolishing expensive english medium schools. Definitely abolishing is not an option, instead efforts should be made to get the hindi medium schools and government schools and colleges to the level of these english medium schools.

And to conclude, writing a blog doesn’t make up for your social responsibilities. Come out in field and have some go. Writing will be much more pleasure once you write the experiences.

I have nothing against you. So please don’t take it otherwise. I’ve jus started a debate.

Wow, amazing post and very very well written. Why don;t you post to IndiVine, if you have not already? I think this post is worthy to be in IndiVine. If you have problems email me.

    • aahang says:

      Thanks for your kind words,Anwin.
I am afraid that if we do not stand together against such divisive politics they will break us on every possible differentiation possible. My worst fear is that this idea which seems like a far fetched dream right now may become a possibility tmrw plunging UP into further darkness of crime, unemplyment and illeteracy.
Sanjay Dutt was saying yesterday that Policemen used to beat me as Nargis Dutt was a Muslim. How cheap and utrocious! Next he blabbered that I went to Jail because of you(muslims) and the crowd cheered. Is this secularism? Even Ram Jethmalani does not know that police used 3rd degree on him but today he is using it to promote selfish interests of his new found allies.
There is a limit to which one can stoop but Sanjay Dutt has vowed to bring shame to his parents who are highly regarded and loved by all Indians including myself.

  6. aahang says:

Charity begins at home and if Mulayam cannot convince his own off springs about the demerits of English and computers why does he think the youth of UP will get duped by his empty rhetoric.
Hindi is our national language but it is also a fact that English is our world language.Indians have an edge over other developing countries because we can speak and understand a language which helps us communicate with the world.
I have traveled extensively across the world and especially in China to realize what a great disadvantage it can be if you cannot tell people if you are sick or hungry.
In India too English and computers offer a ready platform for success not because of anything else but because your skills can be readily used by your employers.
