Nirvana Shatkam – Adi Shankara

I learned the Nirvana Shatakam as part of my education in Chinmaya Mission.Since then it has remained etched in my mind.I really treasure each word of this blissful text by Adi Shankaracharya.Attached video has tranlation by Swami Vivekannanda and is also sung beautifully in classical Indian style.

It is also known as Atma Shatkam and describes the enlightened state of mind or “samadhi”

I am neither the mind, nor the intellect, nor the ego, nor the mind-stuff;
I am neither the body, nor the changes of the body;
I am neither the senses of hearing, taste, smell, or sight,
Nor am I the ether, the earth, the fire, the air;
I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute

I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham).

I am neither the Prana, nor the five vital airs;
I am neither the materials of the body, nor the five sheaths;
Neither am I the organs of action, nor object of the senses;
I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute –

I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham).

I have neither aversion nor attachment, neither greed nor delusion;
Neither egotism nor envy, neither Dharma nor Moksha;
I am neither desire nor objects of desire;
I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute –

I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham).

I am neither sin nor virtue, neither pleasure nor pain;
Nor temple nor worship, nor pilgrimage nor scriptures,
Neither the act of enjoying, the enjoyable nor the enjoyer;
I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute –

I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham).

I have neither death nor fear of death, nor caste;
Nor was I ever born, nor had I parents, friends, and relations;
I have neither Guru, nor disciple;
I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute –

I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham).

I am untouched by the senses, I am neither Mukti nor knowable;
I am without form, without limit, beyond space, beyond time;
I am in everything; I am the basis of the universe; everywhere am I.
I am Existence Absolute, Knowledge Absolute, Bliss Absolute –
I am He, I am He. (Shivoham, Shivoham).

Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam

Born in Persia in the 11th century Omar Khayyam was better known as an astronomer and a mathematician than as a poet. Being a master of Algebra,Geometry,Astronomy and Physics he revised the Persian calendar for  Sultan Malik Shah and named it the Jalali Calendar.

While mathematics was his occupation his heart’s wanderings took him to the realm of verse where his free spirit wondered in the company of wine. Before he passed away in 1123 AD he had composed an enormous body of work in the form of Rubais peculiar of their rhyme and striking content. While most of the ideas were self contained they were unified by a central philosophy of enjoying life while it lasted.

The Rubaiyat was unknown to the western world for the next 600 years,till Edward FitzGerald published a translation around 1860.

There have been many translations since but the one by Fitzgerald is still the most popular.

I am presenting here a few of his rubais that I like more than the others :

Tis all a chequered board of Nights and Days   khayamportraitsm1

Where destiny with men of pieces plays

Hither and thither moves,and mates and slays,

And one by one back in the closet Lays

The moving finger writes and having writ,

Moves on : Nor all thy piety nor wit

Shall lure it back to cancel half a line,

Nor all thy tears wash out a word of it.

And that inverted bowl we call the sky,

whereunder crawling coop’t we live and die,

Lift not thy hands to it for help – for it

Rolls impotently on ….as thou or I.

With Earth’s first clay they did the last man’s knead,

And then of the last harvest sowed the seed.

Yea,the first morning of creation wrote,

What the Last dawn of  reckoning shall read.

Me thinks this Wheel at which we gape and stare,
Is Chinese lantern  – like we buy at fair;
The lamp is Sun and paper shade the world,
And we the pictures whirling unaware. .

The Skies rotate, I cannot guess the cause;
And all I feel is grief, which in me gnaws;
Surveying all my life, I find myself
The same unknowing dunce that once I was!

Be the glass or become the chalice..

Ji chahe to sheesha ban ja, ji chahe paimana ban ja
Sheesha paimana kya banna, mai ban ja maikhana ban ja

Be the glass or become the chalice

Why only the glass or chalice ? become the wine,the tavern

By becoming the wine,the tavern become the symbol of joy

A symbol of joy now, be indifferent to your existence

Being indifferent to existence,a symbol of joy

Be this be that,Isn’t it better that you just loose your senses

Dewaana ban jane se dewaana hona achha hai
Deewana hone se achha khak-e-dar-e-janana ban ja

It’s even better to be mad than to loose your senses

To be mad or to become the dust of the the beloved’s doorstep

Khak-e-dar-e-janana kya hai ahle dil ki aankh ka surma
Shama ke dil ki thandak ban ja noor-e-dil-e-parwana ban ja

Apni aag mein khud jal jaye tu aisa parwana ban ja

~ Hazrat Zaheen Shah Taaji

Arziyaan …..Amazing

In the sufi tradition the building up of ‘sama‘ is a means for the ‘Murids’ to become one with their ‘ Maalik’. When ever I have visited the shrines of sufi saints – Hazrat Nizamuddin in New Delhi,Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer and Hazrat Haji Ali in Mumbai I have sat there listening to Quawwalis and it has given me the immense peace.A sense of coming home to where I belong grips me.This one took me to another level…Beautiful.sufi
